Friday, 3rd November 2017

NHS Blood and Transplant (NHSBT) has agreed to provide expertise to support organ donation for Ugandans in Uganda.

On Thursday 2nd November, Sally Johnson, director of organ donation, signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Dr Byarugaba Baterana of Mulago Hospital in Uganda who signed the MoU on behalf of the Ministry of Health in Uganda.

NHSBT will support the development of a living kidney donation framework and share standards and guidelines.

Also present were Mr Godfrey Kwoba and Mrs Juliet Mugerwa of Uganda High Commission and Dr John Paul Bagala and Mr Moses Mulimira of Uganda-UK Health Alliance, as well as other Uganda UK Health Alliance representatives.

Living kidney donation saves lives and both parties look forward to the many mutual benefits. These include sharing best practice, saving lives, and safeguarding against organ trafficking.

Living kidney donation is highly successful, saving many lives around the world every year.

NHSBT already has an agreement to support the Uganda Blood Transfusion Services.

NHSBT hopes the work will also encourage more British Ugandan people to donate blood and organs in the UK.
