UGANDA AND UK TO BOOST BILATERAL TIES, TRADE AND INVESTMENT

The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Vincent Waiswa Bagiire concluded a 5-days working visit to United Kingdom.

Mr. Bagiire held a meeting with Sir Philip Barton, Permanent Under-Secretary of the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) on 13 April 2022. They exchanged views on regional and international issues of mutual interest and underscored their commitment to further strengthen bilateral relations between UK and Uganda, particularly in the areas of trade and investment.

UK's investment portfolio in Uganda is currently over 1.2 billion GBP with several companies undertaking key projects including infrastructure, agro-processing, manufacturing, energy transmission and industrial parks. There is greater scope for increasing bilateral trade from the current 260 million GBP of which Uganda's exports to UK (goods and services) amount to about 80 million GBP while UK's exports to Uganda amount to 180 million GBP annually. Mr Bagiire thanked the UK government for its support to Uganda in the fight against Covid-19 by donating about 5 million vaccine doses through the COVAX facility.

He also held a meeting with UK importers of Ugandan products on 12 April 2022. They highlighted the vast opportunities and demand for Ugandan agricultural produce, especially vegetables, fruits and processed food products, in the UK market. The importers pointed out the challenges of ensuring sustainability of supply, quality through certification, and high cargo/freight charges.  The Permanent Secretary undertook to liaise with the respective Ministries and private sector stakeholders to address the identified constraints.

He also informed the importers that Uganda Airlines' expected commencement of flights between Entebbe and London would ease cargo delays and reduce freight costs.

The Permanent Secretary on 13 April 2022 also visited MD Import Export company in Hounslow,  a leading importer of fresh fruits and vegetables from several countries including Uganda, and held a meeting with the Director, Mr. Mukesh Lakhani on strategies for increasing access of Ugandan products to the UK market.
